In the one word Arcthuris, with a little help from other Fw words, we will find JJ has told a most interesting and original story, the story of the whole of humanity, the whole of 'dimdom done', the whole dirt in which the future must be planted if it is to grow. He gives us history as it has never been seen before, husk/mask removed.

Cf Bar [Noel's Bar, fw594], which, in its many branch meanings in Sumer-Aryan, Persian, Gaelic, German, etc, has the root meaning of energy, centre of energy, good, food, gathering and concentration of good: god, good, food, fruit, bosom, grain from which beer [spirits] made, assembly, city, fire, dung [firefuel and fertiliser], chief, acme, summit, leader, learned man, hill, heap, wild animal, etc. Bar is the source of words berg, burgh, barley, beer, bear, boar, barn, pyre, bear [carry] ?birth, and many others.
Bar is likely the most popular word in the world, occuring in many languages, mostly meaning a pub or similar - a pub is a gathering of people, a centre of good times, good food and drink, of spirits in all senses - clubpubber, fw594.
It is possible, seems likely, that JJ has saved up his biggest words for this nodal page, where all of life is concentrated and centred, exploding out, scattering from the new sun[god] - right at the centre of the central sentence of the seven sections of the first third of the first seventh of this paragraph is the word shell - compact seed of life and exploding bomb of death. [This is such an 'obvious' pun opportunity, that it is a little surprising that JJ thought of shell only on a later draft, as a change from shall.]
Bar seems to be cognate with Vah, since they both have meanings of bear, carry. The consonant shift between b and v is common in etymology, b and v being orally close, a bilabial plosive and a labiodental fricative. Since vah means go push drive move and marry, I think vah is probably cognate with fuck. Cf the biblical 'to go into a woman'. Vach, also known as Viraj, desire, and daughter of Tama, desire. Vach overlaps with vah in meanings of carry bear move cause to move vehicle cow [ie, horned herbivore].

[A curiosity: The Sumer-Aryan dictionary [now partially online], which is very useful, suggesting cognates in many languages, turned up from an anonymous donor, about the time of Nora's death, at Auckland University library, with the beginnings of a handwritten index, in what looks to my inexpert eye to be exactly JJ's hand and thick black pencil [I have had photocopies of all the drafts of the whole of chapter 17], and with blue pencil markings such as JJ [and no doubt many others] used. A little arrangement with Nora, or Stanislaus or Giogio? To spread his library or dictionaries globally? Did that contribute something to the secret smile we see on JJ's deathmask? Arthur-Arkas, as *son* of the great shebear, means that Arthur is nondifferent from the bearmother, has the same characteristics, the same everything, so everything about Artemis-Artio-Art-Kallisto-Iphegeneia applies to Arthur.
The mother bear is one of the most formidable animals in size, strength and agility, in fierce defence of her young - hence her role as guardian protectress ruler, esp of the young, ie in birth and before puberty and marriage - bears know how to find herbs and roots to heal injuries and illnesses [?] - hence Artemis as healer - bears incubate during hibernation [?cf Ireland = Hibernia] - ie, like Arcturus, like Arthur, like folkheroes Bear's son and John the Bear, they go to Otherworld for part of the year - caves are part of earth, hence return to earthgoddess - newborn humans were placed on bearskins - the Viking berserkers were wearers of bearshirts [sark=shirt] [hence cutty sark = short shirt] - berserkers worshipped Artio, invoked Artio for success in battle - ie, hoped to have the fierce spirit of the shebear - that Artemis and followers take the form of the bear at will is an idea integral to the Brauronia - the girl cubs gave thanks for the forest animals - Artemis [= Diana] is chaste huntress, lover of the wilds, ie, she looks back to the virtues of wildness, away from the vices of cities - cf scouts training for life in forest, as means to learn discipline, strength, ability to protect.

Artemis, [being a wilds and forests goddess, is naturally] a tree goddess - cf Yggdrasil which produced the first woman Lif [Eve means life] - Dryads - Druids - oak nymphs - the greatest shrine of the Galatians [Asia Minor, Turkey, west coast, on Aegean] is called the Druremeton - Galatia is the word Celt [OED] - Artemis: trees hung with masks or dolls of Artemis, facing all four directions, hence protection [cf christmas trees, Noel, fw594] - scarecrows are means by which the goddess's influence protection are called down on crops - Artemis is the Kerynean hind, the hind of Arkadia, standing for love wisdom, anything that cannot be obtained by nefarious means - cf Vach, who also appears as hind - Arge, priestess performed sacred pantomime of death of Actaeon, sacred deer king on Artemis's sacred mountain - Artemis = Diana. Shift from t to s is common, eg water wasser, or the L -tion becoming the English sound -shin. T, s, sh, ts, st, th, dh, d are all etymologically close.
The Assyrian god Asur, Ashur becomes Athur to the Persians. Osiris is Asur, Aser [and Isis is Aset]. Since Ahura Mazda and Asyrrian Asur Ashur Athur have the same symbol, a winged sundisc, I think Ahura is Assyrian Asur. And Surya is Sk sun. So Suvarn Sur [from Sk suvarna sura, golden god], Arthur, Athur, Ahura and Egyptian Asur seem to be, at least somewhat, one. {Since Athura, where the Assyrian remnant settled after the Persian takeover, at the top of the Euphrates, is close to Syria, I would think that Syria would be cognate with Assyria - and Assyria is named after Asur, city and god.] And Apollo, twin brother of Artemis, is sungod. [Avalon, Island of Apples, is cognate with Apollo, according to some hypothesis I dimly remember.]
Cf Germany: ritual bath of Deer goddess, which only doomed man can see - sacred kings ruled for half a great year [great year=100 years?] and then were replaced by co-king, tannist - highly important that king be potent, otherwise famine - Deer gardens = tiergartens = zoos - Tier, German, animal. Tier is cognate with deer, the deer being the first among animals. Deer '=' bear '=' cow, ie incarnation of maximal energy strength power divinity food. Kings were probably not killed, just replaced, before the patriarchy, in which old kings tried to hold on to power [pleonexia].
Artemis, bull and cow, were milk meat leather shoes clothing musical instruments etc. Bull's head [shaped like womb and ovaries] = rebirth = butterfly = double axe, which kills bull. Psyche, Gk, butterfly, soul. Butterfly comes out of cocoon of physical body, transmogrifies. The Ursa major, minor, Bootes, Arcturus circling celebrated, remembered, the rounds of life, the eternal law of reincarnation [which 80% of humans believe in, and the 20% remainder, Christianity, would also believe in, if a 5th C emperor had not identified reincarnation with paganism and outlawed it by force]. [Jesus's disciple's appear to believe in it, since they ask Jesus if a man blind *from birth* had done something bad to be blind. Stephen [and JJ through S] hints at reincarnation when he says: I go to encounter *for the millionth time* the reality of experience. He can hardly have encountered the reality of experience a million times in one life. And note JJ's use of the term Mahamanvantara [the great age] in The Holy Office.] The return of Arcthuris is the return of the ancient faith in reincarnation, the dominance of the [Arcturian] circle in life. Celts were so confident of rebirth, they signed promissory notes for repayment of debt in the next life. JJ makes a point of noting in Ulysses that the Celts [like the Egyptians] had no idea of hell. In an early essay, JJ talks of flinging the keys of hell and of death into the abyss.
Iphigeneia is a title of Artemis. She is a mortuary priestess like Circe and Calypso. [?Church, kirk, comes from Circe.] The blood baptism of the Tauropolos was also in Mithraism. Men dedicated to Artemis went through a mock beheading, a few drops of blood were taken from their necks by the labrys, the doubleheaded axe. [What is the connection labrys and labrinth?] This survives in the English knighting ceremony with the sword.
Artemis of Ephesus was considered the same as goddess Ephesia = appetite. Cp Vach Tama desire. Artemis statue covered in breasts, eggs or bull's testes. Cf Gallus, priest of Cybele, castrated themselves, threw their wedding tackle at statues of Cybele, causing fertility. Gallus, fw594. The castration of the bull to make the tamer ox is the foundation of agriculture. But why pit the cur afore the noxe, fw594. Hence the labrys, double-headed axe, symbolising submission of male energies to female. Cf Scatter brand [phallus, seed, fire, yang, mark, ego, little man, finite self, distinction] to the reneweller, fw594. The male finds his true self, his divinity, in immersion in the female. He becomes whole, hale. In the central-to-fw diagram on fw293, the male fire triangle is in the female yoni. [The triangles, trad symbols of fire and water, ie yang and yin, looking away from each other signify the royal divorce, the two circles overlapping signify the royal marriage. Circles are feminine symbols and love symbols, triangles, sharper, are more masculine, cutting, so the triangles are again yang and yin [masculine] within the 'mysterious feminine', the ultimate identity of the two worlds, heaven and earth, nirvana and sangsara, the pink and punk perfections.] I remember a Doonesbury cartoon with a woman feeling squeamish at the thought of having a little willy in her womb.
Artemis is twin sister and 'counterpart' of Apollo. [Apollo-Arthur connection in Isle of Apples, Avalon.] Goddess of chastity, in contrast to Aphrodite. Ie, the virgin side of the Virgin mother, great goddess. [Virgin because alone as origin of everything, mother as mother of everything.] Virgin and mother are the two main aspects of woman, pre-sex and post-sex. Virginity emphasises original 'purity', divinity, perfection, whiteness. Mary and Isis are virgin mothers.
Like Apollo, Artemis has bows and arrows, deals death, punishes for offences against morality, is healing, purifying. Cf Dah, Persian, commanding what is right and punishing what is wrong. St Ursula, the churches' absorption of the bear goddess, carries arrows. Ursula = little shebear.
Going back before Homer, Artemis is linked to totemism, she is a nature goddess, goddess of fertilising moisture, lakes rivers springs marshy lowlands. Her seat, the marshy valley of the Caystrus. Cf. Hulme, fw594, marshy water meadows, and suchlike. Lever = hare, hares like marshy places. Lancashire is well watered by westerly weather hitting mountains behind, hence cotton and other industry, and Lancashire is marshy [reinforced by the sanddunes thrown up by westerly weather]. Dunes, fw594. Artemis is lady of the lake, of marshes rivers agriculture harvest mill oven grain trees vegetation nuttrees cedar animals, roaming the wilds, wild animals, taming. Cf lady of the lake, in Arthurian legend. [Lady of the lake is linked with Arthur's fairy magician sister, Morgan, I think I remember. Margan, fw594.] With harvest cf Bar, assembly, heap, grain, wheat. The bull gymnastics of Crete was by virgins [possibly partly for the practical reason that menstrual blood might enrage bulls] - the gist is that a certain moral selfdiscipline is needed if you are going to submit bulls to the chop and to agriculture. This is similar to the selfdiscipline needed in the science of firemaking. Prometheus, from pramantha, Sk, twirler, firestick. The city was the centre, the radiating point of goodness, the centre of the city was the temple, the centre of the temple was firemaking. Hence bar = city, fire, firesticks, priests of fire-ritual. So there is a certain tension in the nature of Artemis-Arcturus-Art-Artio-Arthur - both wild and tame - using the strength of the wildness for good - hunting requires discipline knowledge mastering - the gentler female is the natural home of knowledge - today technology has escaped from virtue and intelligence - is in the hands of sorcerer's apprentices, not sorcerers - patriarchal man has enough intelligence to get into trouble, not out of it - Crete [and other places] possibly failed as the agricultural lifestyle produced soil erosion, and the gungho males took over power as matriarchy began to fail to deliver abundance. Greece, Crete and other places [and later, North Africa] lost tree cover, then soil, and the abundance-symbol shifted from bulls to the hardier goats - Taurus to Aries. War replaced peace. Crete had had 3000 years of peace according to Flinders-Petrie, Crete's archeologist. All world topsoil will be gone before 2100 at the present rate of treefelling and bigfarming. Treefellers, fw.
Artemis, wore mural crown, protectress of cities. Cf Apollo, etymology, [?]enclosure. Apollo is god of cities as Hermes is god of travellers, thresholds. Ie, Apollo, cutting off, separating, gathering the good, Hermes, joining the divided. The eternal tension between separating and uniting. Shaun is Apollo to Shem's Hermes. The eternal tension in the circle, cutting off, finitising, reactionariness, parochialism, racism, 'patriotism' - and breaking out of shells to creative growing potential, infinite. Our shades of minglings mengle them and help help horizons, fw594 is a Shem-Hermes sentence. Ie, Every us-them is overcome by mingling, and this broadens us. But Shem and Shaun are twins. Inside and outside the circle are totally touching. Cities have to have gates, they depend on the country. No nation is an island. Esp not now that the other side of the world is a day away. A time for the making of shells and for the breaking of shells. Scatter brand, [= bran, husks, masks, clothing, disguise, ego, little self, finite self, limited self, male-only self, phallic self]. The god Bran is eaten by the world-hen [= dawn] in the form of a grain of wheat and gives birth to the sun [the son of the dawn].
Artemis, face very like Apollo's, drapery frequently girt high for speed. [Otherwise, low drapery - for look of chasteness, probably.]
Artemis = Diana. Diana = Jana, feminine of Janus Dianus. Janus, god of doorways, entrances, beginnings, gates. Beginning of day, of year. Door of house kept open when owners away. Janus gate open in war, closed in peace. Shut only four times in BC Rome. Open in war for return of fighters. Cf van Hoother. Thus the open door at Howth Castle acquires the overtone of war, as well as of hospitality. Hoother is at peace when alone, like god before creation. Uniting with other means trouble. But the culpa is felix. Janus is inventor of agriculture laws money religion trade shipping. Ie, is culture hero like Arthur. His head is found on the coin, the as, with a prow of ship. [?Cf Aser, Aset, Osiris, Isis. What does 'as' mean? Is 'as' cognate with arct-urcs-urs?] Janus is porter doorkeeper opener closer. Cf Porter family. Cf the doorkeeper that Arthur encounters, and has to satisfy. The doorkeeper is the one who manages the balance of separation and re-union. [Religion, etym, re-union.] He is the ultimate keeper protector of life. There must not be perfect union of all things, which would mean the dissolving of all opposites back into the perfectly bland oneness, the fall of the sky, the end of life, the end of consciousness, of experience, because everything is recognised through its opposite [fw, ch 10, in Latin], and there must not be perfect separation, because that would mean total chaos, meaninglessness, the blandness of perfect quantity, the loss of coming together, love. There must be that balance of twoness and oneness we see in the Taoist symbol, in the Y [which was ancient when Pythagoras adopted it as his mystery symbol], in the T [=labrys, and the horizontal yielding yin raised above, supported by the vertical phallic yang], in JJ's word twone, fw3. Aser-Osiris and Arkas [*son* of Artemis-Kallisto] are chopped up and then reunited. Issy's symbol, the heliotrope, is marriage of white [unity] and purple [red and blue ends of spectrum]. Heliotropolis, fw594. Heliotrope is turning to the sun. Heliopolis, city of the sun.
The sun [and the sungod] is a complex symbol. On one hand, it is polarised as yang warrior male judgement Apollo inflexibility distinction differentiation sternness, against the moon mercy gentleness feminine flexibility Hermes Mary mother. Empedocles fragment: sharp-arrowed sun and kindly moon. [Ulysses shooting the suitors.] On the other hand, it stands as a higher symbol of the balance of containment and expansion, of holding in and giving out. The sun shines on the good and the bad. Isaiah's amoral god in Isaiah 45,7: I make peace and I make trouble [evil, calamity]. Closer to the amoral mysterious feminine, the unnameable Tao from which duality comes forth. JJ called women amoral. Issy is spectacularly and wonderfully amoral. And morality, 'knowledge' of good and evil, is the fall. When morality is up, goodness is in decline, Tao te ching. And Hinduism has goodness as one of the three gunas which bind us to illusion, materiality, undivinity, and which have to be transcended. Rajas, tamas, sattvas, fw294. Hitler is the type of the person who sharply distinguishes good and bad, who takes polarism to the erroneous extreme. Janus would have a word with him.
Janus as god of gateways has the symbol: vertical beams and crossbar. The twofaced Janus, looking both ways for protection, for broadmindedness, for openmindedness, for balance, for the non-extremism which is virtue, for moderation, is [?] the three-faced Celtic god Cernunnus, celebrated by the vertical beams and lintels at Stonehenge etc. and in the dolmen, cromlech. Artemis Ephesus temple is one of the seven wonders of world. Eunuch priests. Much in common with Cybele. Artemis called Phoebe, Apollo is Phoebus. Etym. artemes, Gk, safe and sound, from root ar, fit. This etym is doubted, but seems eminently suitable. Cf sur, Fr, safe secure sure. Sur, fw594. Her companions are 9-year-old sea-nymph daughters of Ocean, which circles, girdles the world, and presumably links to the ring of eternity. Artemis killed Adonis, Actaeon. Actaeon the hunter becomes the hunted. Looking on Artemis naked, cf Isis, none can look upon me without dying. Cf also god, none can see me without dying. [Although Jacob even wrestles with god without dying, but perhaps the meaning is spiritual, that seeing the fons and origo of all things is the same as dying to world, piercing the illusion of life and death, which is like dying, because, without the illusion, the game of life cannot be played. The game of life is trying to reach heaven with finite wits. Seeing the ultimate is getting infinite wits, is seeing with such clarity that the game is over, unplayable. Seeing that everything is changeless immortal indestructible energy, there is nothing to do. Van Hoother welcomes the interruption of his punkless pink of perfection. When you reach the top of the mountain of life, the only way is down. Like Moses. You have to get another body, refleshment, another set of illusions, in order to be Homo ludens.]
Artemis leads dances of Muses and Charites [Graces]. Love [charitas] flows from the Graces's eyes in dance. Mother of muses is Mnemosyne, Memory, the Memory greater than our memory. So Artemis is way back, behind or before the Muses and Graces, prior to Love and the arts and sciences. Cf Vach, mother of arts and sciences. Artemis, in Doric Artamis, alternate etym, artamos, butcher, cook, murderer. Cf Arkas, who is chopped up and fed to Zeus by Arkas's gradfather to test Zeus's allknowledge, and is restored by Zeus. The hunter-guilt is treated by this idea of restoration after butchering and eating. Cf the bushman in the film The gods must be crazy, who explains to the dying antelope that he will feed the bushman's family and thanking him for this. Nothing is ultimately lost. Everything is safe and secure in the oceanic circle of life and death. Every de-formation is followed by a re-formation. Energy cannot be created or destroyed. Energy is ceaselessly active, de-forming and reforming, destroying everything it creates and creating everything it destroys. Brahma, creator sustainer destroyer. Behind all finite actuality is infinite creativity. The baby is playing with blocks. It doesn't matter if the blocks fall down, in fact it is good, the baby can go on building. Even the nuclear snowballing of planet earth is ultimately not important. We are Brahma, the baby, creative, destructive, happy way back in our reality as energy, happy to rise, happy to fall. Rise and fall is the wave of energy, the beating of time. But Holy Saltmartin, why can't you beat time? fw.
