Arcthuris 1 [Finnegans wake 594]

Arcthuris
Arcturus - brightest star in the northern celestial hemisphere - one of the first stars to be named - splendid red star of first magnitude - called the Northern Star, called Arthur's Haunt and Bearward - hunter of bear, herdsman, oxdriver or ploughman whose herd or team is stars of Ursa Major, or hippopotamus keeper of wicked ursa major [Egyptian] or the Law [Giordano Bruno's reformed heavens] - in the constellation Bootes - Bootes is bearguard, guarding Ursa Major and Ursa Minor, or is ploughman, behind oxen - Bootes goes round north celestial pole, follows Ursa Major and Minor - Arcturus visible from March - in Egyptian, is called Smat [governor] and Bau [comer cp comeing] - equinoctial, storms - influence dreaded, 'when moist arcturus clouds the sky', stormy reputation - cp Dah, Persian, displeasure annoyance trouble curses imprecations, commanding what is right and forbidding what is wrong - and Vah Dah Be is one two three, and two is the number of trouble [duality, hence conflict, ups and downs] - cp twoce for the pother, fw594 - and when the one cursed and outcast [Arthur, Christ, the Lawmaker, the Dharma-Karma one] returns, there will be trouble - in Hindu mythology, the Outcast - cp waither, fw594, hunter outcast wanderer - bear and bearward or hunter follow each other round the pole - the hunter is the hunted - the old story of the hunter following the bear who has gone round in a circle and is following the hunter - thus invokes ideas like judge not lest you be judged, what you do to others is done to you, the golden rule, the love you get is equal to the love you give, we project our own nature onto our interpretations of others, others generally injure back when we injure - the essence of dharma, the divine law - love yourself 100% and love others 100%, because they will surely find a way to ruin your day, none enjoy unless all enjoy, injury ricochets as untiringly as atoms, so injury [injustice theft] doesn't pay.
So Arcturus is mythologically and in the folkmind [poetic mind] bound up with order, divine law, dharma, karma. Arcturus is the World Axis in the world, in duality, making a circle - the circle involves motion, hence is in the world, in spacetime - the Taoist yinyang symbol also links twoness and circle - the circle is the expansion of the point of order, the world axis, the centre of everything, into the world of duality-plurality. [Two is metonymic of manyness.] Angel, German, axis pole hinge.
We can see how repetitious and reinforcing fw is, when you go into the words. There can be no doubt of JJ's meaning when there is so much reinforcement. We can see that fw multiword multilanguage style enables us to recover our memory, our awareness of things, recover our folkmind, the wisdom of the ages, relearn what wisdom people put into mythology. The spring rising of arcturus marks the beginning of the ploughing hunting sowing and sailing seasons, of going out, of scattering out of winter houses. On one level, winter corresponds to the formless, the uncreation [snow covering everything, taking colour and form away - the end of The Dead - death is going to the formless, the infinitely creative, the source of all life, the Otherworld, Underworld]. Spring is the beginning of journeys - hunt me the journeyon, iteritinerant, fw594 - of A way, away. So spring is fall from wintery sterile bland perfection. Spring is also return of sexual desire.
Bootes in the Odyssey means Arcturus - natural that the brightest star of a constellation and the constellation should be identified or sometimes undistinguished from each other.
Arcturus = Arthur in standard editions of medieval texts. And Arthurus = Arcturus.
Arktos, Gk, bear.
Arkas is a culture hero, he introduces domestic crops, bread, weaving, clothing. Arkas become Ursa Major, his mother Callisto becomes Ursa Minor. Arkas is son of Callisto and Zeus, his mother becomes a bear. The bear is an alternative beast to the cow-bull-horned herbivore - see Vah-vach-vache-cow - as the epitome of energy of goodness of source of good things of nature's cornucopia - in Mithraism, the bull is sacrificed and wheat spills out. Arthur is also a culture hero, in the medieval Welsh writings: he prepares, clears land, uproots treestumps. Compare the folktales Bear's son and John the bear - the culture hero who visits Otherworld and brings back cultural treasures - the Bear's son story is the same as the Trita Thrita Athwiya Aptya in the Rig Veda and the Avesta - cp Athwiya and Arthwys, Welsh, Arthur - cp Trita and Tristram - Arcturus the star spends half the time in the Otherworld - the Micmac of Canada have a story in which they chase the bear from spring to autumn and kill the bear in autumn - there is a new bear every year - coming back angry at being killed, presumably - Dah! trouble.
So with Arthur, Christ, the bear, Arkas and Arcturus, there is the idea of being killed and going to Otherworld and bringing back supreme treasures - we can read Dante's journey as also a harrowing of hell, and thus Paradise is the result of the journey through hell - roses from dung - Christ is evoked in Thuris, Eng, frankincense [thurible] - thus, thuris/tus, turis, Latin, frankincense, from thyos, Gk, incense, sacrifice, offering [burning] - thuo, Gk, to sacrifice, kill - thyein, Gk, sacrifice, smoke [smoke = spirit - cp ruah, Hebrew, smoke, spirit [ie, the formless] - cp chi/qi, Chinese, steam, vapour, spirit, energy] - since we have gold in Suvarn, we have a gold-frankincense-myrrh pattern in the first divine three parts of the seven parts of this first third of the first of the seven sections of this paragraph - Christ Arthur bear is the sacrifice - many cultures worshiped praised killed and ate bears - like Eucharist, ie eating the energy-source - the popularity of Arthur is fundamentally from his being incarnation of primal power, energy - his warrior aspect is a part of this -
ME spellings of Arthur: artur, arcthur, arcthurus, arthour, arcturus, arctour - cp Latin auctor, Eng author - Arthur Christ is authority, ie origin. Arthur may be Osiris [Aser in Egyptian] and Asur, the Assyrian god. Isis is Aset. The endings may be merely sex indicators, cp Hebrew bar boy bat girl. This brings Osiris and Isis closer together, we can read them as the male and female aspects of a god As. As yin and yang are aspects of chi [primal energy]. Cp Brahma and Vach, male and female aspects of Brahma. Isis is Io [Lempriere's Classical dictionary], Io is cow, sexual partner of Zeus [equivalent of Brahma, husband of Vach, primal cow].
To Novalis, Arcturus was the guiding spirit of the universe, of harmony and order. In Polynesia, Arcturus is the star of joy.
Ursa Major is called Arthur's plough.
Thuris, OHG, colossus giant leviathan daemon daimon demon - ie energy. Thurs, ON, giant ogre monster, a rune letter, thorn. The rune thorn is activity, active mind, polarities, master of swords [cutting through the crap the gordian knot the tangle]. Cp the rune Tir. Durst, Swiss, wild hunter. By setting, eg Christ in a wider context, our concept of Christ is broadened, clarified, epiphanised, explained, and we move closer to the simplicity and heart of the matter. Our memory is restored. The universal human tendency to lose the essence in the superficialities, to strain out gnats and swallow camels, to have ears and eyes and not hear or see, to lose sight of the forest in the trees and leaves, to gain information and lose our common sense [wisdom, conscience, consciousness, awareness, awakeness], to attack the tree of problems at leaf level and therefore always have the tree of problems with us, since it grows faster than one can remove leaves, is cured, reversed. By overlayering of Christ Arthur Arcturus thuris Arkas, we gain insight into each of these from all the others. Each is given context by the others. The puzzle pieces are explained by being set in the big picture. This is true conscience, which is etymologically the all-together-science. Their union in the multiword tends to distinguish the superficialities and the common simplicity and profundity-sublimity of meaning. The overlap tends to mute the superficialities and to reinforce the common essence. Thus we come to essence through superficialities, we come to unity through manyness. JJ understands that quantity is the mother of quality. More blocks, greater pyramid. JJ in Fw is building the greatest pyramid, gnomon, point of order, surveying point, in history. He doesn't bother to reproduce what is already written in other books. He gives the words which yield up their quantity and quality with research. He rewards the reader [in the Oxford sense] with things coming together. His words are like mountainpeaks, separate, unconnected, mystifying, puzzling, nonsense. Research, working down from peaks to valleys of data, connects the dots of peaks and reveals the vast landscape, demistified. [Mist, German, dung.] Instead of us living in this modern winter of wisdom, learning more and more about less and less [Shaun is a spatialist, Shaun is winter, Shaun is 1500-2000], we are guided by JJ to know everything about everything, guided from leaves to tree, from death to life, from nightmare to resurrection of mind, from selfdestruction to happiness, from part to whole, to health.

Today we stand on the brink of nuclear winter, global irradiated snowball, suffocated by bureaucracy, choked in the dust of the worst violence-pollution in history, deceived by money-corrupted science, and equally we stand on the brink of a golden age. Nuclear giants and ethical infants, for ethics [pursuit of happiness] requires realism, and realism requires the big picture, which is the only real picture. Fw is a superbook for supermen. The greatest opportunity. Today humanity is standing in the middle of Fw594.
The words Finnegans wake can be read as an imperative, and as a statement of hope and faith.
Greed [striving for just more, taking out more than you put in, theft] is maximal selfharming. Theft is injury, injury means violence. Violence gets everywhere people get. Every heap of overpay in history, individual, national and imperial, has fallen, eroded by the tireless energy of the underpaid. None enjoy unless all enjoy. The world-average family income is US$275,000 a year. Plenty for all. When one person takes the property of 1000, that person also is much worse off, having made 1000 energetic enemies. A choice: none enjoying or all enjoying. We have annual income from 100,000 times average to 10,000th of average, and spreading. A range of one billion in pay for equal work. There must be a point of pay injustice when intelligence kicks in.
