Arcturus - brightest star in the northern celestial hemisphere - one of the first stars to be named - splendid red star of first magnitude - called the Northern Star, called Arthur's Haunt and Bearward - hunter of bear, herdsman, oxdriver or ploughman whose herd or team is stars of Ursa Major, or hippopotamus keeper of wicked ursa major [Egyptian] or the Law [Giordano Bruno's reformed heavens] - in the constellation Bootes - Bootes is bearguard, guarding Ursa Major and Ursa Minor, or is ploughman, behind oxen - Bootes goes round north celestial pole, follows Ursa Major and Minor - Arcturus visible from March - in Egyptian, is called Smat [governor] and Bau [comer cp comeing] - equinoctial, storms - influence dreaded, 'when moist arcturus clouds the sky', stormy reputation - cp Dah, Persian, displeasure annoyance trouble curses imprecations, commanding what is right and forbidding what is wrong - and Vah Dah Be is one two three, and two is the number of trouble [duality, hence conflict, ups and downs] - cp twoce for the pother, fw594 - and when the one cursed and outcast [Arthur, Christ, the Lawmaker, the Dharma-Karma one] returns, there will be trouble - in Hindu mythology, the Outcast - cp waither, fw594, hunter outcast wanderer - bear and bearward or hunter follow each other round the pole - the hunter is the hunted - the old story of the hunter following the bear who has gone round in a circle and is following the hunter - thus invokes ideas like judge not lest you be judged, what you do to others is done to you, the golden rule, the love you get is equal to the love you give, we project our own nature onto our interpretations of others, others generally injure back when we injure - the essence of dharma, the divine law - love yourself 100% and love others 100%, because they will surely find a way to ruin your day, none enjoy unless all enjoy, injury ricochets as untiringly as atoms, so injury [injustice theft] doesn't pay.
So Arcturus is mythologically and in the folkmind [poetic mind] bound up with order, divine law, dharma, karma. Arcturus is the World Axis in the world, in duality, making a circle - the circle involves motion, hence is in the world, in spacetime - the Taoist yinyang symbol also links twoness and circle - the circle is the expansion of the point of order, the world axis, the centre of everything, into the world of duality-plurality. [Two is metonymic of manyness.] Angel, German, axis pole hinge.
We can see how repetitious and reinforcing fw is, when you go into the words. There can be no doubt of JJ's meaning when there is so much reinforcement. We can see that fw multiword multilanguage style enables us to recover our memory, our awareness of things, recover our folkmind, the wisdom of the ages, relearn what wisdom people put into mythology. The spring rising of arcturus marks the beginning of the ploughing hunting sowing and sailing seasons, of going out, of scattering out of winter houses. On one level, winter corresponds to the formless, the uncreation [snow covering everything, taking colour and form away - the end of The Dead - death is going to the formless, the infinitely creative, the source of all life, the Otherworld, Underworld]. Spring is the beginning of journeys - hunt me the journeyon, iteritinerant, fw594 - of A way, away. So spring is fall from wintery sterile bland perfection. Spring is also return of sexual desire.
Bootes in the Odyssey means Arcturus - natural that the brightest star of a constellation and the constellation should be identified or sometimes undistinguished from each other.
Arcturus = Arthur in standard editions of medieval texts. And Arthurus = Arcturus.
Arktos, Gk, bear.
Arkas is a culture hero, he introduces domestic crops, bread, weaving, clothing. Arkas become Ursa Major, his mother Callisto becomes Ursa Minor. Arkas is son of Callisto and Zeus, his mother becomes a bear. The bear is an alternative beast to the cow-bull-horned herbivore - see Vah-vach-vache-cow - as the epitome of energy of goodness of source of good things of nature's cornucopia - in Mithraism, the bull is sacrificed and wheat spills out. Arthur is also a culture hero, in the medieval Welsh writings: he prepares, clears land, uproots treestumps. Compare the folktales Bear's son and John the bear - the culture hero who visits Otherworld and brings back cultural treasures - the Bear's son story is the same as the Trita Thrita Athwiya Aptya in the Rig Veda and the Avesta - cp Athwiya and Arthwys, Welsh, Arthur - cp Trita and Tristram - Arcturus the star spends half the time in the Otherworld - the Micmac of Canada have a story in which they chase the bear from spring to autumn and kill the bear in autumn - there is a new bear every year - coming back angry at being killed, presumably - Dah! trouble.
So with Arthur, Christ, the bear, Arkas and Arcturus, there is the idea of being killed and going to Otherworld and bringing back supreme treasures - we can read Dante's journey as also a harrowing of hell, and thus Paradise is the result of the journey through hell - roses from dung - Christ is evoked in Thuris, Eng, frankincense [thurible] - thus, thuris/tus, turis, Latin, frankincense, from thyos, Gk, incense, sacrifice, offering [burning] - thuo, Gk, to sacrifice, kill - thyein, Gk, sacrifice, smoke [smoke = spirit - cp ruah, Hebrew, smoke, spirit [ie, the formless] - cp chi/qi, Chinese, steam, vapour, spirit, energy] - since we have gold in Suvarn, we have a gold-frankincense-myrrh pattern in the first divine three parts of the seven parts of this first third of the first of the seven sections of this paragraph - Christ Arthur bear is the sacrifice - many cultures worshiped praised killed and ate bears - like Eucharist, ie eating the energy-source - the popularity of Arthur is fundamentally from his being incarnation of primal power, energy - his warrior aspect is a part of this -
ME spellings of Arthur: artur, arcthur, arcthurus, arthour, arcturus, arctour - cp Latin auctor, Eng author - Arthur Christ is authority, ie origin. Arthur may be Osiris [Aser in Egyptian] and Asur, the Assyrian god. Isis is Aset. The endings may be merely sex indicators, cp Hebrew bar boy bat girl. This brings Osiris and Isis closer together, we can read them as the male and female aspects of a god As. As yin and yang are aspects of chi [primal energy]. Cp Brahma and Vach, male and female aspects of Brahma. Isis is Io [Lempriere's Classical dictionary], Io is cow, sexual partner of Zeus [equivalent of Brahma, husband of Vach, primal cow].
To Novalis, Arcturus was the guiding spirit of the universe, of harmony and order. In Polynesia, Arcturus is the star of joy.

By setting, eg Christ in a wider context, our concept of Christ is broadened, clarified, epiphanised, explained, and we move closer to the simplicity and heart of the matter. Our memory is restored. The universal human tendency to lose the essence in the superficialities, to strain out gnats and swallow camels, to have ears and eyes and not hear or see, to lose sight of the forest in the trees and leaves, to gain information and lose our common sense [wisdom, conscience, consciousness, awareness, awakeness], to attack the tree of problems at leaf level and therefore always have the tree of problems with us, since it grows faster than one can remove leaves, is cured, reversed. The puzzle pieces are explained by being set in the big picture. This is true conscience, which is etymologically the all-together-science. Their union in the multiword tends to distinguish the superficialities and the common simplicity and profundity-sublimity of meaning. The overlap tends to mute the superficialities and to reinforce the common essence. Thus we come to essence through superficialities, we come to unity through manyness. JJ understands that quantity is the mother of quality. More blocks, greater pyramid. JJ in Fw is building the greatest pyramid, gnomon, point of order, surveying point, in history. He doesn't bother to reproduce what is already written in other books. He gives the words which yield up their quantity and quality with research. He rewards the reader [in the Oxford sense] with things coming together. His words are like mountainpeaks, separate, unconnected, mystifying, puzzling, nonsense. Research, working down from peaks to valleys of data, connects the dots of peaks and reveals the vast landscape, demistified. Today we stand on the brink of nuclear winter, global irradiated snowball, suffocated by bureaucracy, choked in the dust of the worst violence-pollution in history, deceived by money-corrupted science, and equally we stand on the brink of a golden age. Nuclear giants and ethical infants, for ethics [pursuit of happiness] requires realism, and realism requires the big picture, which is the only real picture. Fw is a superbook for supermen. The greatest opportunity. Today humanity is standing in the middle of Fw594.
The words Finnegans wake can be read as an imperative, and as a statement of hope and faith.
Greed [striving for just more, taking out more than you put in, theft] is maximal selfharming. Theft is injury, injury means violence. Violence gets everywhere people get. Every heap of overpay in history, individual, national and imperial, has fallen, eroded by the tireless energy of the underpaid. None enjoy unless all enjoy. The world-average family income is US$275,000 a year. Plenty for all. When one person takes the property of 1000, that person also is much worse off, having made 1000 energetic enemies. A choice: none enjoying or all enjoying. We have annual income from 100,000 times average to 10,000th of average, and spreading. A range of one billion in pay for equal work. There must be a point of pay injustice when intelligence kicks in.

In the one word Arcthuris, with a little help from other Fw words, we will find JJ has told a most interesting and original story, the story of the whole of humanity, the whole of 'dimdom done', the whole dirt in which the future must be planted if it is to grow. He gives us history as it has never been seen before, husk/mask removed.
I hope it is readable.
In summary, Bear = Arthur = Artemis = Arcturus = Ursa Major = primal energy, good, strength, protection, power, food, knowledge, character, god, spirit, rule, governance, wisdom, education, order, triumph over death, tree of life, world axis, law, karma, golden rule, wheel of fortune, identity of duality and oneness, etc.
Cf Bar [Noel's Bar, fw594], which, in its many branch meanings in Sumer-Aryan, Persian, Gaelic, German, etc, has the root meaning of energy, centre of energy, good, food, gathering and concentration of good: god, good, food, fruit, bosom, grain from which beer [spirits] made, assembly, city, fire, dung [firefuel and fertiliser], chief, acme, summit, leader, learned man, hill, heap, wild animal, etc. Bar is the source of words berg, burgh, barley, beer, bear, boar, barn, pyre, bear [carry] ?birth, and many others.
Bar is likely the most popular word in the world, occuring in many languages, mostly meaning a pub or similar - a pub is a gathering of people, a centre of good times, good food and drink, of spirits in all senses - clubpubber, fw594.
It is possible, seems likely, that JJ has saved up his biggest words for this nodal page, where all of life is concentrated and centred, exploding out, scattering from the new sun[god] - right at the centre of the central sentence of the seven sections of the first third of the first seventh of this paragraph is the word shell - compact seed of life and exploding bomb of death. [This is such an 'obvious' pun opportunity, that it is a little surprising that JJ thought of shell only on a later draft, as a change from shall.]
Bar seems to be cognate with Vah, since they both have meanings of bear, carry. The consonant shift between b and v is common in etymology, b and v being orally close, a bilabial plosive and a labiodental fricative. Since vah means go push drive move and marry, I think vah is probably cognate with fuck. Cf the biblical 'to go into a woman'. Vach, also known as Viraj, desire, and daughter of Tama, desire. Vach overlaps with vah in meanings of carry bear move cause to move vehicle cow [ie, horned herbivore].

Kallisto means fairest, but applied as one says good people of the dangerous fairies - applied to the ugly, frightening - yet well-loved and popular goddess - athletic and great hunter - related to Kali - [kal his course, fw594] embodying all that is frightening and gruesome - Kali inspires some of the most beautiful and powerful poetry ever written - Kali forces her worshippers to confront fear of death [and all other unpleasantnesses] and thus conquer it [them] - ie therapy against denial, head in the sand, pleasure principle [instead of reality principle which is the real pleasure principle, truth sweet in aftertaste - and truth is sweet in foretaste too, if it doesn't have to fight its way through wall of cocoon comfort zone shell of ego pride denial of reality - which is plain insanity] - kal his course: callous course, Kali's course, course of nature, life and death, eat and be eaten - cf film the Grizzly man - Kali linked to reincarnation - ie cycle of life and death - the eternal going round the pole, the still point of order of life, in duality, hunter and hunted, hunter becoming hunted, karma, golden rule, and reincarnation, like the bear from hibernation.

Artemis, [being a wilds and forests goddess, is naturally] a tree goddess - cf Yggdrasil which produced the first woman Lif [Eve means life] - Dryads - Druids - oak nymphs - the greatest shrine of the Galatians [Asia Minor, Turkey, west coast, on Aegean] is called the Druremeton - Galatia is the word Celt [OED] - Artemis: trees hung with masks or dolls of Artemis, facing all four directions, hence protection [cf christmas trees, Noel, fw594] - scarecrows are means by which the goddess's influence protection are called down on crops - Artemis is the Kerynean hind, the hind of Arkadia, standing for love wisdom, anything that cannot be obtained by nefarious means - cf Vach, who also appears as hind - Arge, priestess performed sacred pantomime of death of Actaeon, sacred deer king on Artemis's sacred mountain - Artemis = Diana. Cf Artemis, Arge, Actaeon, Arcturus, Arkas - it seems that the difficult-to-say rct has reduced to either kt, rk or rt, and hence to rg and rd [see Ardus below]. - Cf, for example, urcsus to ursus in Latin. Shift from t to s is common, eg water wasser, or the L -tion becoming the English sound -shin. T, s, sh, ts, st, th, dh, d are all etymologically close.
The Assyrian god Asur, Ashur becomes Athur to the Persians. Osiris is Asur, Aser [and Isis is Aset]. Since Ahura Mazda and Asyrrian Asur Ashur Athur have the same symbol, a winged sundisc, I think Ahura is Assyrian Asur. And Surya is Sk sun. So Suvarn Sur [from Sk suvarna sura, golden god], Arthur, Athur, Ahura and Egyptian Asur seem to be, at least somewhat, one. {Since Athura, where the Assyrian remnant settled after the Persian takeover, at the top of the Euphrates, is close to Syria, I would think that Syria would be cognate with Assyria - and Assyria is named after Asur, city and god.] And Apollo, twin brother of Artemis, is sungod. [Avalon, Island of Apples, is cognate with Apollo, according to some hypothesis I dimly remember.]
Cf Germany: ritual bath of Deer goddess, which only doomed man can see - sacred kings ruled for half a great year [great year=100 years?] and then were replaced by co-king, tannist - highly important that king be potent, otherwise famine - Deer gardens = tiergartens = zoos - Tier, German, animal. Tier is cognate with deer, the deer being the first among animals. Deer '=' bear '=' cow, ie incarnation of maximal energy strength power divinity food. Kings were probably not killed, just replaced, before the patriarchy, in which old kings tried to hold on to power [pleonexia].
Artemis, bull and cow, were milk meat leather shoes clothing musical instruments etc. Bull's head [shaped like womb and ovaries] = rebirth = butterfly = double axe, which kills bull. Psyche, Gk, butterfly, soul. Butterfly comes out of cocoon of physical body, transmogrifies. The Ursa major, minor, Bootes, Arcturus circling celebrated, remembered, the rounds of life, the eternal law of reincarnation [which 80% of humans believe in, and the 20% remainder, Christianity, would also believe in, if a 5th C emperor had not identified reincarnation with paganism and outlawed it by force]. [Jesus's disciple's appear to believe in it, since they ask Jesus if a man blind *from birth* had done something bad to be blind. Stephen [and JJ through S] hints at reincarnation when he says: I go to encounter *for the millionth time* the reality of experience. He can hardly have encountered the reality of experience a million times in one life. And note JJ's use of the term Mahamanvantara [the great age] in The Holy Office.] The return of Arcthuris is the return of the ancient faith in reincarnation, the dominance of the [Arcturian] circle in life. Celts were so confident of rebirth, they signed promissory notes for repayment of debt in the next life. JJ makes a point of noting in Ulysses that the Celts [like the Egyptians] had no idea of hell. In an early essay, JJ talks of flinging the keys of hell and of death into the abyss.
Iphigeneia is a title of Artemis. She is a mortuary priestess like Circe and Calypso. [?Church, kirk, comes from Circe.] The blood baptism of the Tauropolos was also in Mithraism. Men dedicated to Artemis went through a mock beheading, a few drops of blood were taken from their necks by the labrys, the doubleheaded axe. [What is the connection labrys and labrinth?] This survives in the English knighting ceremony with the sword.
Artemis of Ephesus was considered the same as goddess Ephesia = appetite. Cp Vach Tama desire. Artemis statue covered in breasts, eggs or bull's testes. Cf Gallus, priest of Cybele, castrated themselves, threw their wedding tackle at statues of Cybele, causing fertility. Gallus, fw594. The castration of the bull to make the tamer ox is the foundation of agriculture. But why pit the cur afore the noxe, fw594. Hence the labrys, double-headed axe, symbolising submission of male energies to female. Cf Scatter brand [phallus, seed, fire, yang, mark, ego, little man, finite self, distinction] to the reneweller, fw594. The male finds his true self, his divinity, in immersion in the female. He becomes whole, hale. In the central-to-fw diagram on fw293, the male fire triangle is in the female yoni. [The triangles, trad symbols of fire and water, ie yang and yin, looking away from each other signify the royal divorce, the two circles overlapping signify the royal marriage. Circles are feminine symbols and love symbols, triangles, sharper, are more masculine, cutting, so the triangles are again yang and yin [masculine] within the 'mysterious feminine', the ultimate identity of the two worlds, heaven and earth, nirvana and sangsara, the pink and punk perfections.] I remember a Doonesbury cartoon with a woman feeling squeamish at the thought of having a little willy in her womb.
Artemis is twin sister and 'counterpart' of Apollo. [Apollo-Arthur connection in Isle of Apples, Avalon.] Goddess of chastity, in contrast to Aphrodite. Ie, the virgin side of the Virgin mother, great goddess. [Virgin because alone as origin of everything, mother as mother of everything.] Virgin and mother are the two main aspects of woman, pre-sex and post-sex. Virginity emphasises original 'purity', divinity, perfection, whiteness. Mary and Isis are virgin mothers.

Iphigeneia is a title of Artemis. She is a mortuary priestess like Circe and Calypso. [?Church, kirk, comes from Circe.] The blood baptism of the Tauropolos was also in Mithraism. Men dedicated to Artemis went through a mock beheading, a few drops of blood were taken from their necks by the labrys, the doubleheaded axe. Artemis is twin sister and 'counterpart' of Apollo. [Apollo-Arthur connection in Isle of Apples, Avalon.] Goddess of chastity, in contrast to Aphrodite. Behind all finite actuality is infinite creativity. The baby is playing with blocks. It doesn't matter if the blocks fall down, in fact it is good, the baby can go on building. Even the nuclear snowballing of planet earth is ultimately not important. We are Brahma, the baby, creative, destructive, happy way back in our reality as energy, happy to rise, happy to fall. F, as one of three gifts to Christ, signifies esp. his spiritual side, virtue, aroma of sweetness, role as high priest [gold = king, myrrh = human, suffering, the myrrh plant has thorns]. Myrrh and F are resins that bleed from trees, and this bleeding is aided by incisions, symbolic of flow of love, increased by wounds. F signifies Christ perfuming world with his spirit, healing, antidote to poison of sin [error]. Incense clouds are equated with pillar of smoke that guide wanderers. Sky fw594.01, Da, cloud. Newel, fw594.01, Eng, pillar. The Temple is called hill of F. Arc of F is close enough to be hill of F. Solomon's beloved's breasts are hill of F. So altogether F = everything divine, sublime and fine. [But use of incense in religion is letter not spirit, theatre not spiritual experience. It is an effort to be spiritual, an ersatz spirituality. It is a material portrait of spirituality, not spirituality.]

Thuri, Aymara [Bolivia], steady strong solid stable firm established. Cf artemes, Gk, safe and sound. Although it is unlikely that JJ knew or cared about Aymara thuri, it is interesting to see it 'works'. Can there be something in the sound that conditions its uses, whatever the language? Yes, that is what onomatopoiea means. For all JJ's incredibly advanced play with meanings, he never seems to forget the sound value. Arcthuris has a special sound value. The confrontation of that k sound followed by the thur is very powerful. Much stronger than arcturus, which can be said without particular emphasis. Arcthuris is the sort of word someone doing magical incantations would be pleased to have. Arcthuris is the shock meeting of the hard and the soft.

Arkas is also culture hero of wine, and the cart, cf Charles' Wain [Wagon]. People seem to have chucked all their culture treasures, and culture heroes, at Arcturus. Which of course makes sense. Hunting, ploughing, wagoning [the wheel]. Arkas, Arthur [Arthur's Haunt], Kallisto-Artemis. In India, the seven stars of the great bear are the seven sages or rishis. And the root of rishi is [so I read] - bear.
Harold Bayley, who doesn't always give his evidence, says that Ak = great, in Karnak, Carnac [great cairn, great gathering of stone], Menak [a great stone at Carnac, men is Brythonic stone], Cormac, archos, aktor [Gk chief] archon, magnus, maximus, Akrea [Juno, great Rhea] Merodach [Assyrian Jupiter] and oak [sacred to Jupiter, certainly is the great tree]. So perhaps we can say that arc is indistinguishable from ideas of greatness. Bayley says that thur is Old Scand, Phoenician and Chaldee for bull, and that there is a bull's head on Thor's chest. He says that Asur was said three times at Nineveh, like Holy holy holy. And he connects Asur and azure, the blue of the heavens. All this in general makes sense: great things would tend to associate with other great things, including with the fiction of gods.
But the human hunt for greatness is telling, it shows a consciousness of apparent littleness and weakness, which consciousness can only exist by contrast. Animals don't seem to have it, animals don't have a complex about being weak or little, mice and antelopes just get on with it and get eaten when they have to be. This obsession for greatness suggests that humans feel uncomfortable in littleness, in finity, in partness, which suggests they have a buried memory of being infinite. And this urge to have friends in high places, even to the point of having imaginary friends in high places, works two ways, depending on which end of the thunderbolt, which side of the thorn barrier, you are. And reliance on friends in high places works against selfsufficiency, responsibility, activeness, spontaneity, consciousness of one's own powers, freedom. Svadesia, 594, selfsufficiency. Know thyself means Experience your self, your Self, the worldseed you are, hidden by your bodily apparent self. Be still and know I am god means the same, Ignore for a moment the messages of the bodily senses, and ignore the constant film and chatter of the mind, which is based on bodily sense experience, and experience yourself, the infinite energy that is running, managing, operating, maintaining, repairing, feeding this almost infinitely complex body, which is consciousness energy existence, formless timeless changeless ever'streaming'. There is a knack to it because it is no longer a subject-object experience, as we are used to, but a subject one. Which is the meaning of the eye-sun [identity of subject and object] on the good old dollar bill, at the peak of the pyramid, the peak experience. Bar, Persian Gaelic, god good heap hill summit peak chief leader etc. There is another knack to it, because it is not form, as we are used to, but utterly formless. We give ourselves unthinkingly to experiencing outwardness otherness, this and that, the formed, and never take time to experience the experiencer. Hence the reminders. The outis-zeus [=nothing-god], the neither-this-nor-that. 'The highest pitch of absolutely nothing'. Ie, the utterly formless, characteristicless [or allcharacterness], that is infinite energy, the sungod that is wholly present 'in', wholly present as, each and every atom and creature. The paradox of this life is that everything is nothing [sound and fury signifying nothing] and the nothing is everything. The O. The opening of a fw word from nothing to everything is a performance of this paradox. Humanity is uniquely the being that is enabled [enables itself] to experience lostness, so it can know foundness. We kill the HCEs, like Parnell, Christ and Socrates, because of our lostness. The HCEs are created by our need to be found. Humanity must never be entirely found, or it would become unable to experience being found. It would be stuck in heaven. And humanity must never be entirely lost, or the point of being lost would be lost. Hence our many barriers, resistances, to intelligence. 'A stubborn stiffnecked people'. Noah makes Ham 'servant of servants'. But servant of servants is a title of the Pope, and Jesus washes the feet of the disciples. The last shall be first. The rich get soft [and drowned in the labour and cost of defending their plunder] and the poor get busy. And society, 'it is just about to, it is just about to rolywholyover', fw597. The third world is coming up in percentage of world wealth by 10% every 30 years. From 44% in 1987. [Kyklos, v45, p237-258.] And accelerating. 98% of wealth and 98% of population by 2100, if we get that far. And when the third world are on top [again] it will be their turn to be rolled over [unless we aim for fairsharing, the North Pole of this dizzy wheel of misfortune, nightmare of history]. We have now reached the extreme of folly, of selfharming, when even we [will soon] see we have gone too far, and the future will swing back towards sense and golden age. Dah! Arcthuris comeing! I have omitted to say that Arcturus is in Hindi mythology the Outcast. And JJ has waither, fw594, Scot, hunter, outcast, wanderer [with patient serving waiter]. Who gets all three cheers. Wherever a barrier is set up, any distinction, separation, excommunication, the outcast returns, hence trouble. Noah's cursing of Ham is ultimately futile. The outcasting of the third world is in the long run futile. Nothing is an island. National boundaries are 0.01% barrier, 99.99% gateway. 0.01% separate, 99.99% conjoined. The worshipped, praised and eaten bear, bull, cow etc returns. Rubbish cannot be thrown out. I hear that there is a mass of rubbish the size of Texas floating in the ?Pacific. The dropping of 600 tons of depleted uranium is the ultimate faith in the nonreturn of castoffs. Bran, Fr, castoffs, throwouts. Bran, Eng 19th C slang, bread. Bread cast on waters.
Arcturus is hunter, herdsman, oxdriver, ploughman, law, or hippotamus goddess keeper of evil big bear. All of these have a common idea. Outcast is a little different. But we have always cast out the teachers, who have the 'supreme cheeks' to imply that there is something to our advantage that we don't know, namely that people will floor you if you spit on them. JJ took himself off, to save them the trouble of 'tearing him apart themselves'. His 'silence', such as it was, and his exile, were selfprotection. His cunning was in order to talk without being caught. Confucius, Solomon, Buddha got by, and Lao Tzu made it out, but Bruno, Parnell, Christ, Socrates were not so lucky. As JJ said himself, when still young, he was a man of 'timid courage'. In the modern rise of blacks, of women, of the Irish, of India, of comparative religion, JJ saw signs of the times. The outcast return. He was sad that WWII postponed the return of JJ in Fw.
